Dr. Kurt Driessens

Biography

Kurt Driessens is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. His primary research interests encompass Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Relational/Logical Learning, Transfer Learning, and Data Representation. Driessens has made significant contributions in these domains, particularly in exploring relationships in datasets and the automatic discovery of data representations. He has worked extensively on issues of representation within Reinforcement Learning and has applied various relational regression techniques in this context. Driessens earned a degree in Engineering majoring in Computer Science from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) in 1997, followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Sciences in 2004. His career includes positions as a visiting lecturer at the University of Zambia, a visiting researcher at the Institut Jozef Stefan in Slovenia, and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Since joining Maastricht University in 2011, he has held several important academic roles, including Director of Studies for multiple programs and core team member in the development of a new Bachelor in Computer Science.
