Dr. Kurt Driessens

Biography

Kurt Driessens is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences at Maastricht University, primarily focusing on machine learning, reinforcement learning, relational/logical learning, transfer learning, and data representation. He has made significant contributions to the fields of reinforcement learning and relational learning, with notable work on relational reinforcement learning techniques. Driessens' research extends to the application of transfer learning in various domains including medical classification. He aims to enhance the automatic discovery of data representations and the relationships within datasets. Driessens received his degree in Engineering, majoring in Computer Science from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1997 and completed his Ph.D. in Applied Sciences in 2004. His academic career includes positions such as visiting lecturer at the University of Zambia and post-doctoral researcher at the University of Waikato. He has been a faculty member at Maastricht University since 2011, where he has overseen significant curriculum developments in the Bachelor of Knowledge Engineering and the Master’s programs in Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research. Currently, he coordinates the KE@Work honors program.
