Biography

Kurt Hübner became a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in 2012, after serving as the director of the Institute for European Studies, which he joined in 2006. He received his PhD from the Free University of Berlin, where he began his academic career focusing on Political Economy. His research examines the interplay of institutions and capital accumulation at both the national and international levels. Over the years, his work has concentrated on monetary and currency regimes, the politics of economics, and the complexities of European integration, specifically addressing the contradictions and complementarities of sustainability and international competitiveness. Hübner has authored and edited 15 books and numerous articles, and has been involved in various national and international research networks. He currently holds grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the European Commission. In 2008, he received a paper award for EU Governance from ECSA-Canada. Hübner is also passionate about mentoring students through the EU Model Universities and study tours, and has been a distinguished speaker in both academic and non-academic settings. He has been a research visitor at several institutions, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Birmingham.
