Biography

Kurt Sylvan is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, with a focus on epistemology and the philosophy of mind. He joined the department in January 2014, initially as a post-doctoral lecturer on the Normativity: Epistemic and Practical project, and became a permanent faculty member in 2015. Sylvan completed his PhD at Rutgers University in 2014 under the advisorship of Ernest Sosa, with a dissertation examining the epistemic rationality of respect for truth. His research prominently features themes in epistemology, cognitive science, and practical reason, alongside historical aspects of epistemology. He has taught classes on ethics, aesthetics, political philosophy, history of philosophy, and metaphysics. A significant portion of Sylvan's research is dedicated to epistemic normativity and epistemic value. His recent publications include a paper in Philosophical Review proposing a systematic non-consequentialist account of theoretical normativity, referred to as Epistemic Kantianism, and another in Philosophical Studies addressing similar themes in practical reason. Currently, he is finalizing a book that develops Kantian ideas related to theoretical normativity, titled Respect Truth: A Kantian Account of Theoretical Normativity.
