Dr. Kurt Weyland

Biography

Kurt G. Weyland is a professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests primarily concentrate on democratization, authoritarian rule, social policy, policy diffusion, and populism in Latin America and Europe. He utilizes a diverse range of theoretical and methodological approaches, drawing on insights from cognitive psychology and conducting extensive field research across several countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, and Venezuela. His notable contributions to the field include the books 'Democracy and Equity: Failures of Reform in Brazil' (1996), 'The Politics of Market Reform in Fragile Democracies: Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela' (2002), and 'Bounded Rationality and Policy Diffusion: Social Sector Reform in Latin America' (2007). Since 1991, he has served in various editorial capacities at notable journals and has been recognized with research support from prestigious institutions such as the SSRC and the Woodrow Wilson Center. Weyland completed his Ph.D. in Political Science at Stanford University in 1991 and holds two master's degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Universität Mainz, West Germany. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to scholarly discourse as an editor and reviewer for numerous academic journals. Weyland's most recent publication, 'Making Waves: Democratic Contention in Europe and Latin America' (2014), showcases his expertise in analyzing democratic movements historically and contextually.
