Biography

Kurt Zilm is the William K. Lanman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Yale University, where he has been a faculty member since 1982. His research focuses on the development of innovative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods to tackle significant challenges in chemistry, materials science, and biology. A prominent area of his current research is the investigation of the role that prion proteins (PrP) play in the phase states related to Alzheimer's disease and other infectious prion diseases. Zilm's laboratory employs advanced NMR biophysical techniques to study complex coacervates formed by anionic polymers and amyloid-beta oligomers, analyzing the conditions conducive to liquid-liquid phase separation of PrP. His work has notably contributed to the understanding of how co-factors influence the formation of infectious prions and the sequential molecular events linked to PrP and amyloid-beta oligomers in Alzheimer's pathology. Additionally, Zilm's research program is interdisciplinary, featuring extensive collaborations with Yale and Dartmouth medical schools as well as partnerships with instrument manufacturing companies.
