Kwanghun Chung is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a core member at the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) and the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University in 2005 and pursued his Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was mentored by Dr. Hang Lu. Dr. Chung's doctoral research focused on developing automated integrated microsystems for high-throughput imaging and phenotyping in living systems. After earning his Ph.D. in 2009, he completed post-doctoral training at Stanford University in Karl Deisseroth's lab, where he invented the novel technology CLARITY for molecular analysis of biological samples. Since joining MIT in 2013, he leads an interdisciplinary team dedicated to advancing technologies that enhance understanding of complex biological systems. His lab has introduced several key technologies, such as SWITCH and SHIELD, that have significant applications in 3D imaging and phenotyping. Chung is a co-founder of LifeCanvas Technologies, facilitating the adoption of these technologies in over 300 labs worldwide. His accolades include the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and multiple awards recognizing his innovations in neuroscience.
