Biography

Dr. Kyla Smith's research history includes investigating structure/function relationships of wild-type and mutant human concentrative nucleoside transporters (hCNTs) using the two-microelectrode voltage clamp (TEVC) technique combined with the expression of Xenopus laevis oocytes. The steady-state and presteady-state currents of hCNTs studied provide information on substrate-cation selectivity, cation:nucleoside coupling ratios, turnover numbers, the number of proteins expressed in the plasma membrane, and partial reactions in the transport cycle. Since 2015, she has been hired to develop and coordinate the online section of PHYSL 210, teaching topics that include cell physiology, autonomic nervous system physiology, cardiovascular physiology, muscle physiology (cardiac/skeletal/smooth), and exercise physiology.
