Biography

Kyung-Suk Kim is a Professor of Engineering at Brown University, leading the Nano Micromechanics Laboratory and serving on the executive committee of the solid mechanics group. He received his Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from Brown University in 1980 and completed postdoctoral training at Caltech in 1980. Dr. Kim has a rich teaching history, having spent nine years at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, before joining Brown in 1989. His research encompasses solid mechanics, focusing on the scale bridging between macro and nano/micro-mechanics of solids. Notable contributions include advancements in dynamic plasticity and nonlinear fracture mechanics as well as innovations in nanotribology theory. Professor Kim has developed theories related to self-organization, and his pioneering work in ruga mechanics seeks to analyze materials under dynamic conditions. He has supervised over 40 Ph.D. students and Post Docs, many of whom have continued successful careers in academia and industry. He is actively involved with various scientific societies, contributing to the engineering and education fields through his research and teachings.
