Biography

L. Maria Bo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Stanford University. She completed her Ph.D. in English Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 2018, following her M.Phil. in 2014 and M.A. in 2011, also from Columbia University. She holds a B.A. from UC Berkeley in English and Linguistics, graduating with Highest Honors in 2009. Prior to joining Stanford, Maria taught at California State University Fullerton, where she trained graduate students in pedagogy and conducted classes focused on Asian, American, and Asian American literature. With over a decade of experience living and working in New York City, she has also served as a translator and writing consultant. Maria’s research interests center around comparative literature, particularly 20th and 21st-century literature of East Asia and the Americas. She studies translation and its critical implications, contributing to fields such as Asian studies and ethnic studies. Her current book project examines English-Chinese literary translations during the Cold War, illuminating methodologies for studying multilingual diasporic literature. Additionally, she has begun writing on Asian/American science fiction.
