Dr. Laisheng Chou

Biography

Laisheng Chou is a professor at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, specializing in Restorative Sciences and Biomaterials. Dr. Chou holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia, a DMD from Shanghai Medical University, and a CAGS from the University of California, San Francisco. His research focuses on the molecular biocompatibility of implant materials, specifically hydroxyapatite and bioactive glass materials used in dental implants. His studies aim to understand the mechanisms governing the biological tissue response to material surface chemistry and topography. Dr. Chou is also actively involved in engineered bone regeneration and the development of biomimetic scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. He has addressed significant challenges in bone repair and tissue engineering by manipulating material chemistry and scaffold geometry to enhance osteogenic activity. His long-term goals include creating innovative approaches to scaffold design that mimic anatomical structures for clinical treatment of orofacial and orthopedic bone defects, as well as studying HIV-1 infection in oral mucosal Langerhans cells. Throughout his career, Dr. Chou has received several recognitions, including the prestigious Metcalf Cup Prize for teaching excellence at Boston University.
