Biography

Laith Aqel is a Clinical Lecturer in Law and Associate Research Scholar at Yale Law School. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School (2021) and a B.A. from New York University Abu Dhabi (2014). His current work focuses on challenging government abuses under national security pretexts, particularly the weaponization of anti-terrorism laws and the suppression of community organizers and activists both in the United States and abroad. Aqel has a significant interest in human rights, liberation, and material decolonization. As a Robert L. Bernstein Fellow, he has worked with indigenous communities on issues related to forced displacement, dispossession, the role of transnational corporations, and war crimes. Domestically, he has participated in litigation challenging racist immigration policies, incommunicado military detention, and U.S. involvement in crimes against humanity. While at Yale, he served as the executive editor of the Yale Journal of International Law and has held various leadership roles in organizations focused on refugee assistance and global legal challenges.
