Biography

Lala Leelarathna is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction at Imperial College London. He is a Consultant in Diabetes at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where he specializes in the evaluation of diabetes technology. Dr. Leelarathna graduated with Honours MBBS from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, completed his specialist training in the UK, and earned an MSc from King’s College London. In 2014, he was awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge, focusing his research on hypoglycemia, automated insulin delivery systems, and continuous glucose monitoring in type 1 diabetes. His work has significantly contributed to ongoing advancements in diabetes technology. He has led numerous studies assessing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of these technologies and has co-authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications, including landmark studies in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Diabetes Care. In recognition of his contributions, he received the NHS England Outstanding Contribution Award for Quality Care in 2019. Dr. Leelarathna's current research is centered on evaluating the role of continuous glucose monitoring and automated insulin delivery in adults with type 2 diabetes who have advanced kidney disease and are undergoing dialysis treatment.
