Dr. Lama Al Aswad

Biography

Lama Al-Aswad is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery, with a strong interest in disease prevention and population health management. She is currently the Vice Chair of Quality and Safety and the Director of Tele-ophthalmology and AI Innovations at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. As a faculty member of the Penn Research Embedded Computing Integrated Systems Engineering (PRECISE) Center, she focuses on integrating technology into ophthalmology care. Dr. Al-Aswad has contributed to education in the field by launching multiple curricula at NYU Langone and has directed several fellowship programs in glaucoma and innovations in ophthalmology. She holds a medical degree from Damascus University and completed her residency at SUNY Downstate. Additionally, Dr. Al-Aswad has a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University, enhancing her expertise in healthcare policy and management. Her leadership roles extend to being a past president of both the New York Glaucoma Society and the New York chapter of Women in Ophthalmology, and she actively serves on various committees enhancing the field of ophthalmology through innovation and technology integration. Dr. Al-Aswad's research interests include advancing artificial intelligence in ophthalmology, tele-ophthalmology, and improving patient access to care.
