Dr. Lance Freeman

Biography

Lance Freeman is the James W. Effron University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds joint appointments in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design and the Department of Sociology in the School of Arts & Sciences. His research is focused on neighborhoods, examining how they change over time and the roles they play in people's lives. Freeman utilizes new technologies and tools to study neighborhoods and is motivated by the aim of using knowledge to plan and build equitable places. He has published numerous articles in refereed journals addressing issues such as gentrification, urban poverty, housing policy, urban sprawl, the relationship between the built environment and public health, and residential segregation. His notable books include 'Go Where the Hood Is: Views on Gentrification' from Temple University Press and 'Haven and Hell: Ghetto Black America' from Columbia University Press. He also authored 'Planning and Control of Land Development' published by the University of North Carolina Press. Before his academic career, Freeman worked as a researcher for Mathematica Policy Research and served as a City Planner for the New York City Housing Authority.
