Lance Manuel is the Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation Professor in the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, and his academic journey includes a M.S. in Civil Engineering Applied Mechanics from the University of Virginia and a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. With over seven years of consulting engineering experience, Manuel's projects have focused on probabilistic seismic risk and hazard analysis related to nuclear power plants, as well as investigations into failures stemming from mechanics and materials issues. Since joining the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor in 1999, he has centered his research on modeling uncertainties in load response characteristics of civil engineering infrastructure and renewable energy systems, particularly in the context of climate change and ocean renewable energy. He plays an active role in academia as the editor-in-chief of ASME’s Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering and is a fellow of several engineering societies. His research has been supported by various organizations, including the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.
