Biography

Lane Bekar is an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan in the College of Medicine, specializing in the areas of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology. His research interests focus on neuromodulators, glial cells, and neurodegeneration, particularly as they relate to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. With an aging population, the concerns surrounding these diseases are increasingly critical, with over 300,000 Canadians affected by Alzheimer's alone. His work investigates the physiological and pathological roles of the locus coeruleus (LC) neurons, which decline in numbers as part of the aging process and are believed to influence important central nervous system functions. Dr. Bekar employs a variety of advanced research techniques including extracellular patch-clamp electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and multiphoton imaging. He is also a member of several professional organizations including the Neural Systems Plasticity Research Group and the Canadian Association for Neuroscience, fostering collaboration and discussion within the neuroscience community.
