Biography

Lanhee J. Chen, Ph.D. is the David & Diane Steffy Fellow in American Public Policy Studies at the Hoover Institution and serves as the Director of Domestic Policy Studies in the Public Policy Program at Stanford University. He is an affiliate of the Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies. Chen is a presidentially-appointed, Senate-confirmed member of the independent bipartisan Social Security Advisory Board. He previously held significant roles in high-profile U.S. political campaigns, notably serving as policy director for Governor Mitt Romney during his presidential bid in 2012. In that capacity, he was Romney's chief policy adviser and senior strategist, responsible for developing the campaign’s domestic and foreign policy. In addition to his campaign experience, Chen served as a senior appointee at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the George W. Bush Administration and has worked in private law practice at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, providing counsel to various presidential, gubernatorial, and congressional campaigns. Chen earned his Ph.D. and A.M. in political science from Harvard University, his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School, and his A.B. magna cum laude in government from Harvard College.
