Biography

Lara Estroff received her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Swarthmore College in 1997, majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Anthropology. Following her undergraduate studies, she spent a year as a visiting researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, where she was introduced to the field of biomineralization and studied chemical approaches to archaeological problems. In 2003, she obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University, working in the laboratory of Professor Andrew D. Hamilton on the design and synthesis of bio-inspired organic superstructures for controlling the growth of inorganic crystals. After completing her Ph.D., she became an NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow in Professor George M. Whitesides's laboratory at Harvard University from 2003 to 2005. Dr. Estroff joined the Materials Science and Engineering department at Cornell University in 2005 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. She has previously served as Director of Graduate Studies in her department from 2015 to 2019 and currently holds the position of Chair. Her research focuses on bio-inspired materials synthesis, crystal growth mechanisms, and high-resolution characterization of pathological mineralization.
