Dr. Lars Behrendt

Biography

Lars Behrendt is an Associate Professor at Uppsala University, engaged in the Department of Organismal Biology. His research laboratory specializes in microfluidics, biological imaging, and the ecological insights into the response mechanisms of individual communities of microorganisms to environmental landscapes and perturbations. By developing innovative technologies, they aim to replicate fundamental environmental features and analyze their impacts on organisms' functions and survival. His immediate research objective focuses on forecasting the effects of anthropogenic chemicals on changing aquatic environments, by integrating microfabrication-based methods with single-cell physiological assessments. This includes utilizing laboratory-on-a-chip approaches and high-throughput devices to gather extensive environmental and physiological data on key marine species such as bacteria and phytoplankton. Behrendt’s work significantly contributes to understanding the complexities of ecological interactions, essential for ecosystem-wide risk assessments, especially given the intensified effects expected from climate change.
