Laura Anderson Barbata is a Mexican transdisciplinary artist currently based in New York. She was born in Mexico City and has dedicated her career to long-term collaborative projects across various cultural contexts including the Venezuelan Amazon, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Norway, and the United States. Her work addresses themes of social justice and the environment, often integrating performance, procession, dance, music, textile arts, costuming, papermaking, and zines into protest art. A significant ongoing project is 'La Extraordinaria Historia de Julia Pastrana', initiated in 2005, which led to the removal of Pastrana's body from the Schreiner Collection in Oslo and her successful repatriation for burial in Sinaloa, Mexico. Throughout her career, Barbata has received support from the National Fund for Culture and Arts (FONCA), Mexico, and has worked with the Brooklyn Jumbies to present artistic interventions across numerous cities and museums both nationally and internationally. Her work is included in prestigious collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Barbata is a former member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores from 1999 to 2017 and taught at the Escuela Nacional de Escultura, Pintura y Grabado La Esmeralda.
