Dr. Laura Braden

Biography

Laura Braden is an Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in sociology with a focus on cultural organizations and the dynamics of recognition in the contemporary art world. Her research particularly emphasizes gender, institutional prestige, and the organizational mechanisms that affect visibility for artists and their artworks. Braden's current NWO Open Competition project, 'Deal Crossroads: Navigating Challenges Shifting Legal Cultural Landscapes,' examines how museums in Rotterdam, Austin, and Manchester adapt and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in rapidly changing environments. Methodologically, she employs quantitative analysis, social network analysis, and qualitative fieldwork to explore how institutions respond to societal pressures. Her past NWO Veni project, 'Boundaries Design,' investigated how Dutch and American designers navigate overlapping professional fields and legitimacy. Braden's work has been published in prominent journals and she collaborates with international researchers, informing public debates on museum policies and representation in the arts. At Erasmus, she teaches sociological theory of cultural policy and supervises a range of academic research related to cultural institutions and gender in the arts.
