Dr. Laura Cowen

Biography

Laura Cowen is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on ecological statistics, particularly animal demography and capture-recapture methods. Cowen has applied her expertise to various fields including human, fishery, aquaculture, and seabird populations, estimating population parameters such as survival and abundances. She collaborates with scientists across disciplines including ecologists, fisheries scientists, microbiologists, and seabird biologists to tackle ecological problems. Furthermore, she works with sociologists and anthropologists to model aspects of injection drug user populations and lemur populations. Through her research, Cowen develops statistical methods that provide robust estimates and insights into these complex ecological dynamics.
