Biography

Laura Crisa is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Pharmacology. Her research focuses on identifying developmental cues provided by myeloid immune cells and vascular endothelia for pancreatic progenitors. She aims to exploit signals that enhance pancreatic islet cell regeneration in injury models. Her studies involve engineering islet-like tissue microenvironments to improve transplant engraftment in vivo and modeling diabetogenic insults ex vivo in organotypic cultures. Crisa's current work centers on newly discovered mechanisms of activation of adenosine-IGF-dependent pro-regenerative pathways and pharmacologic interventions to bolster these pathways in tissue repair settings. She also aims to discover tissue regenerative signals delivered by pro-repair immune cells and blood vessels. Crisa has a strong record of collaboration and review within the scientific community, including roles in multiple scientific review panels for organizations such as the NIH and the American Heart Association.
