Biography

Laura Curiel is an Associate Professor in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary and a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Systems at Monterrey Institute of Technology & Higher Education in 1995 and obtained her Ph.D. in Imaging Systems from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon in 2001. Her research primarily focuses on Mental Health activities and the application of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. She develops tools that facilitate the translation of research into practical applications through pre-clinical experimental platforms for HIFU. This includes collaborative projects supporting both clinical and pre-clinical research guided by MRI. Her work involves investigating bio-effects, designing new therapeutic devices, and exploring monitoring tools to achieve the safest and most effective treatment outcomes. Dr. Curiel is particularly interested in continuous improvement of the HIFU therapeutic approach, aiming to expedite the translation of research results into clinical practice. She has designed and tested new HIFU probes for prostate cancer and has worked on modeling to improve clinical outcomes based on elastographic imaging techniques for HIFU treatment evaluation.
