Dr. Laura Eastlake

Biography

Joined University of Glasgow as James Murray Beattie Lecturer in Victorian Literature in 2024. Previously a Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Edge Hill University, where she was the founding Co-Director of the EHU Nineteen Centre for Nineteenth Century Studies. Laura holds an MA, MLitt, and PhD from the University of Glasgow. Her research interests include Victorian Gothic, Sensation Fiction, Reception Studies, Victorian Masculinities, and Substance Histories, particularly sugar. She focuses on how the legacies of the past shape contemporary culture and society. Her book, 'Ancient Rome and Victorian Masculinity' published by Oxford University Press in 2019, examines how Victorian writers and artists looked to the ancient Roman world to construct models of masculinity. Laura has also explored the impact of volcanos and excavations, particularly in Pompeii, on the history of Gothic fiction. In addition to her academic work, she engages in public outreach, has curated exhibitions, and is involved in various research grants related to Victorian studies. Laura is available to supervise PhD projects in Victorian literature, Gothic studies, classical receptions, and masculinity studies.
