Laura Fumagalli is a Reader in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester, specializing in condensed matter physics. She received her M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2002 and obtained her Ph.D. in Information Technology from the same university in 2006. During her doctoral research, she focused on developing new instrumentation methods to probe nanoscale dielectric properties using scanning probe microscopy, which evolved into her expertise in scanning dielectric microscopy. Fumagalli has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Barcelona and has been involved in projects related to biological system interactions at the nanoscale. In 2015, she joined the Condensed Matter Physics group at Manchester and has since continued her research on electric polarization and atomic-scale properties of materials. She has been awarded numerous grants, including an ERC Consolidator grant for her ongoing project investigating dielectric properties of confined water and biomolecules.
