Laura Fumagalli is a Reader in the Condensed Matter Physics group in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester. She received her MSc in Electronic Engineering in 2002 from the Polytechnic University of Milan and École Supérieure d’Électricité in France. She completed her PhD in Information Technology in 2006 at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Her doctoral research focused on developing new instrumentation methods for probing nanoscale dielectric properties using scanning probe microscopy techniques. After completing her postdoctoral research at the University of Barcelona, she returned to the UK in 2015 to continue her work in condensed matter physics, focusing on the electric polarization of materials at the atomic scale. She has been recognized for her contributions to the field, receiving the ERC Consolidator Grant in 2018 for her project on two-dimensional liquid-cell dielectric microscopy, aiming to probe dielectric properties of confined molecular liquids at atomic-scale confinement. Laura is an active member of the Royal Microscopical Society and engages in various collaborative research initiatives. Her current research interests include the dielectric properties of biomolecular systems and the advancement of scanning dielectric microscopy techniques.
