Laura W Gamer received her Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College and went on to earn a PhD in Cell Developmental Biology from Vanderbilt University. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the biotech company Genetics Institute, she became a staff scientist and collaborated with Dr. Vicki Rosen to study the biology of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) and their roles in the skeleton. Since 2001, she has been at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM), where her research focuses on understanding the roles of BMP family members in knee joint formation and in joint diseases such as osteoarthritis. She is particularly interested in the basic biology of the meniscus and is working to isolate and characterize stem cells for meniscus tissue regeneration and repair.
