Laura Gillespie is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland, specializing in Molecular Oncology. Her research focuses on the role of MIER family transcriptional regulators in cell differentiation and cancer progression. With a B.Sc. and Ph.D., she has established a prominent research agenda centered on the regulation of gene programs that influence cellular responses, including differentiation and proliferation. A significant part of her work has led to the discovery of MIER1, which interacts with estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and has been identified as a key inhibitor of estrogen-stimulated growth in breast carcinoma cells. In her lab, Gillespie investigates the functions of MIER2 and MIER3, which are also implicated in transcriptional regulation. Her work is funded through multiple research grants including the Medical Research Fund and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
