Laura Gould is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at New York University. Her primary research concentrates on enhancing the understanding of sudden unexplained deaths in childhood (SUDC) and deaths related to febrile seizures. Her clinical research background encompasses both clinical investigations and translational research, focusing on neurologic physical therapy and ergonomics to maximize function in patients with neurologic disorders and injury-related disabilities. Laura's interest in SUDC was sparked by a personal tragedy when her 15-month-old daughter died suddenly without explanation in 1997. This experience highlighted the severe lack of awareness regarding these deaths in the clinical and medicolegal systems, as well as the absence of specific standards for child death investigations. In response, she launched initiatives to increase research and support for SUDC, co-founding an organization dedicated to this cause and advocating for legislative measures to support families affected by unexplained child deaths. She joined NYU in 2014 as a Research Scientist and has continued her work on SUDC closely since joining the Department of Neurology.
