Biography

Laura Pope Hale is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at Duke University. Her research focuses on the mechanisms responsible for the generation of normal immune responses and immune-mediated diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Hale Lab employs cellular and molecular biology techniques to understand the triggers of intestinal inflammation and the pathogenesis of inflammation-associated neoplasia. Dr. Hale is dedicated to developing novel therapies for IBD treatment, investigating mechanisms that determine the immunogenicity of oral antigens, and creating novel adjuvants for oral vaccines. Her work is relevant to the pathogenesis and treatment of infectious diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Hale is also an expert in the pathologic evaluation of colitis and immunodeficiency in both humans and mice, and she is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
