Biography

Laura Harris is a cultural sociologist currently working as an Anniversary Fellow on a project titled 'Experimental Filmmaking Cultural Sociology Place.' She has a background in sociology and art theory and has worked in various sociology departments and contemporary art galleries. As a book review editor for Cultural Sociology, she convenes the BSA Sociology Arts study group. Her current research explores the concept of living museums through ethnographic and creative research methods. She examines how museums fabricate beliefs of place and the spatial relational practices involved. Her postdoctoral project experiments with visual methods to reflect on the co-production of knowledge between sociologists and practicing artists. Laura's work has been exhibited in galleries and focuses on making spaces for the discussion of visual research within the social sciences. She has initiated the Sociological Review's Image-Maker residence scheme, promoting visual work that engages with sociological themes. Additionally, she researches the cultural, social, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on independent art workers, drawing attention to themes of 'invisible' labor in the art world. Her interests include the atmospheric qualities of place, artistic filmmaking, and qualitative research methods.
