Biography

Laura Lewis is an Associate Professor at the Athinoula Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MIT. She completed her PhD in Neuroscience at MIT and has conducted postdoctoral work in neuroimaging. Her research focuses on developing multimodal approaches to imaging the human brain, particularly in understanding the neural circuitry that controls sleep and its effects on brain function. Her work has revealed fast fMRI techniques that measure subsecond neural dynamics, as well as the discovery of cerebrospinal fluid flow waves during sleep. Lewis’s lab aims to develop methods that analyze and interpret multimodal neuroimaging data to study previously undetectable aspects of brain function, with an emphasis on fast fMRI, EEG, and PET. Her long-term vision is to contribute significantly to the neuroimaging community by developing widely adopted analytical methods that will have a large-scale impact on cognitive neuroscience. She is particularly interested in the neural basis of sleep and its consequences on brain function. Her research has received several prestigious awards, highlighting her contributions to the field.
