Laura Macdonald is a Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Institute of Political Economy at Carleton University. She has published numerous articles in journals and edited collections addressing the role of non-governmental organizations in development, global civil society, and citizenship struggles in Latin America. Her research interests span Latin American politics, Mexican politics, North American politics, Canadian foreign policy, democracy, civil society, and gender trade. Macdonald has edited four books on topics related to violence in Latin America, regional integration in North America, and post-neoliberalism in the Americas. She regularly comments on issues concerning the North American political economy and is a member of the McLeod Group, an organization of academics and development professionals focused on enhancing Canadian policy for international cooperation and foreign affairs. Her recent work examines Canada's role in Latin America and explores policies to reduce crime and violence in Mexico City, as well as transnational activism for human rights across North America.
