Biography

Laura is a lecturer in Microbiology at the School of Infection and Immunity at the University of Glasgow. She is currently working on student-staff partnership projects to create skills portfolios for courses that embed employability skills development and authentic work experience. Laura was awarded the University of Glasgow Team Teaching Excellence Award in June 2023 for her work enhancing the student experience. Additionally, her interest in employability skills and developing employment-ready graduates has led her to run the MSci Microbiology program at the University of Glasgow, supporting BSc(Honours) Internship final-year projects. With a background in lab research, Laura found her calling in teaching, focusing on student engagement and understanding complex topics in Microbiology. She obtained her MSci in Forensic Analytical Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde in 2010 and pursued a PhD with a Wellcome Trust scholarship at the University of Glasgow, followed by a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Technology Sydney. Her research has focused on the use of novel species-specific protein antibiotics to combat multi-drug resistant bacteria, specifically Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Laura is passionate about public engagement, particularly concerning antibiotic resistance, and has demonstrated her ability to communicate complex scientific information to non-specialists. She has been involved in various public engagement initiatives, including her work with Soapbox Science and as a project manager for Glasgow's Pint Science. Laura was recognized with the NSW Young Tall Poppy Year award in 2020 for her contributions to science communication.
