Biography

Laura Rupp is an Associate Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she directs the Centre for Global English. Her role involves connecting researchers, students, and learners to study and address pressing linguistic and societal issues related to the use of English worldwide. Dr. Rupp is also the creator of a MOOC on English pronunciation, which features exercises and videos designed to enhance mutual understanding among English speakers from diverse backgrounds. Her research interests include language variation and change, grammatical features of English varieties, pronunciation in English Lingua Franca contexts, as well as the interface between grammar and discourse pragmatics. She has received numerous grants, including a British Academy Visiting Fellowship and has held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions such as the University of Toronto and the Universität Bern. Laura teaches various courses on Global English and English text analysis and is actively involved in activities related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She has received the VU Teaching Award for her excellence in teaching and has organized and participated in conferences, lectures, and workshops in her field.
