Biography

Laura Isabel Serna is an associate professor in History and Cinema Media Studies at the University of Southern California. She received her Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard University in 2006. Her research includes a focus on modern Mexico and the social history of cinema in the 20th century United States. She is the author of "Making Cinelandia: American Films and Mexican Film Culture during the Golden Age" published by Duke University Press in 2014. Additionally, she is a co-editor and translator of “There Hispanic Stars!”: Collected Writings of Latino Film Critics in Hollywood from 1921-1939, released by the Chicano Studies Research Center Press in 2023. Serna has published numerous articles and book chapters throughout her career. Her research interests encompass social history, culture, transnational media industries, and migrant culture. She has received various accolades including the Fulbright Garcia Robles Research Fellowship for 2015-2016 and the Fulbright Garcia-Robles Student Research Fellowship for 2003-2004.
