Biography

Laura Toni is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London (UCL). She is a member of the ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning Intelligent Systems) and a Turing Fellow Alumni. She leads a team of researchers and serves as a postgraduate tutor. Laura received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2005 and 2009, respectively. In 2007, she was a visiting scholar at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where she worked with Professors Pamela Cosman and Laurence Milstein on joint source-channel coding for wireless communication systems. From 2009 to 2011, she worked in the Tele-Robotics Application (TERA) department at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), investigating wireless sensor networks for robotics applications. She was later a Post-doctoral fellow in the Electrical Computer Engineering Department at UCSD and in the Signal Processing Laboratory (LTS4) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Switzerland. Laura joined UCL as a Lecturer in 2016 and became an Associate Professor in 2022. Additionally, she is set to serve as a Visiting Senior Staff Research Scientist at DeepMind from July 2024 to July 2025.
