Biography

Dr. Lauren Welte is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. She obtained her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Queen's University in 2020 and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2023. Her research focuses on understanding healthy and pathological joint function in the foot and ankle. By utilizing novel sensors, she aims to probe the in vivo behavior of tendons and ligaments, identify subject-specific differences, and ultimately design innovative footwear to inform new rehabilitation strategies. Dr. Welte's work encompasses areas such as biomedical imaging, biomechanics, and neuromechanics, particularly looking at the mechanisms of pathologies that affect foot and ankle function. She is particularly interested in how footwear design impacts human locomotion and is currently seeking independent, curious, and hard-working undergraduate and graduate students to join her research team.
