Biography

Laurens Mandemaker is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, with research focused on micro- and nanoplastics. His work employs background analytical chemistry techniques, particularly micro-spectroscopy and scanning probe force microscopy, to identify, characterize, and quantify emerging pollutants in various matrices, including blood, water, soil, and food. Additionally, he is involved in designing and synthesizing reference materials, such as nanoplastics of specific sizes and polymer types with convenient labels, to aid toxicological assays. Mandemaker's efforts contribute to achieving proper risk assessments for micro- and nanoplastics. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Master's degree in Nanomaterials from Utrecht University, where he defended his dissertation titled 'Birth, Life, Death of Surface-Mounted Metal-Organic Frameworks' in June 2021, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ir. Bert M. Weckhuysen. He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher in micro- and nanoplastics at the Institute for Sustainable Circular Chemistry for four years before becoming an Assistant Professor in Toxicology and Inorganic Chemistry Catalysis groups, participating in collaborative projects like MOMENTUM, AURORA, and FHERITALE.
