Biography

Laurent Lewis holds a doctorate from McGill University and a postdoctoral degree from Cornell University. He is a professor at the Department of Physics and a pioneer in numerical modeling, having been the founding director of the Quebec High-Performance Computing Network and the Calcul Quebec consortium. He has garnered significant grants to provide researchers with top-notch computing facilities. With approximately 180 scientific publications, his research addresses various issues in condensed matter physics and materials, utilizing numerical methods such as molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, with a recent interest in machine learning. Lewis has extensive university management experience, including serving as the director of the Department of Physics (2001-2007) and as the vice-dean for research and creation at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (2008-2017). He has been involved in key projects at the University of Montreal, including the Apogee project in data science and the Complexe des sciences, which opened in 2020. As an associate vice-rector for research (2017-2020), he was responsible for several major initiatives, including Canada Research Chairs.
