Biography

Dr. Laurie Twells is a clinical epidemiologist with expertise in epidemiology, health economics, health systems, and health policy involving patient-oriented research. She is the Associate Dean of the Division of Population Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Twells has served as the Scientific Director for the CIHR-funded NL Support Unit, which focuses on patient-oriented research. She is also a founding member of the Canadian Breastfeeding Research Network, which aims to enhance research capacity and advocacy for breastfeeding support in Canada. Her research interests encompass the epidemiology of obesity in Canada, childhood obesity prevention, the treatment of adult obesity through bariatric surgery, breastfeeding support, and the correlation between preconception health and fertility. Dr. Twells advocates for an interdisciplinary and collaborative research approach that engages health care professionals, decision-makers, and patient partners to inform health policy and improve health outcomes. In her teaching roles, she leads courses in Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Research Design within the graduate program.
