Lawrence (Lonnie) Berger is an Associate Vice Chancellor for Research in the Social Sciences and the Sheila B. Kamerman Alfred J. Kahn Professor of Social Policy at the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor. Berger's research focuses on how economic resources, sociodemographic characteristics, and public policies influence parental behaviors and family well-being. His work aims to inform public policy and improve the capacity of families to access resources that enhance family functioning and well-being, ensuring children can grow and develop in optimal environments. His engaged studies primarily concentrate on three areas: examining the determinants of substandard parenting and child maltreatment, exploring the associations between socioeconomic factors—such as family structure, economic resources, and household debt—and parenting behaviors, and assessing the influence of public policies on parental behaviors affecting child and family well-being.
