Dr. Lawrence Hill

Biography

Lawrence Hill is a seasoned academic and creative writer with over thirty years of experience mentoring developing writers. As a professor in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph since 2016, he has contributed significantly to the field of creative writing. Hill is the founder and chair of the organizing committee for Gryphons Read, a campus-wide common reading program at Guelph. His extensive teaching experience includes positions at prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and the University of British Columbia. He is an accomplished author of eleven books, with notable works including 'Illegal' and 'Book Negroes,' which have garnered multiple awards. Hill delivered the esteemed Massey Lectures in 2013 and co-wrote a successful television miniseries adaptation of 'Book Negroes'. His public intellectual efforts and advocacy for issues like Black history and human rights are well-documented, with contributions to national discussions on medically-assisted dying. Hill holds honorary doctorates from ten Canadian universities and has been recognized with awards such as the Order of Canada. He is also actively involved in humanitarian efforts, volunteering with organizations like Crossroads International and participating in literacy programs for inmates.
