Professor Dr. Lawrence Korngut

Biography

Dr. Lawrence Korngut is a neurologist specialized in neuromuscular diseases, serving as a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He is a full member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and has led various initiatives focusing on improving health outcomes for patients with neuromuscular conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). With over 62 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Korngut has made significant contributions to clinical trials and epidemiology related to neuromuscular diseases, having conducted 80 clinical trials since 2009. He played a crucial role in developing the Calgary ALS & Motor Neuron Disease Clinic, further establishing its reputation for multidisciplinary care. Beyond his research, he has served as the Director of Innovation & Commercialization at Hotchkiss Brain Institute, fostering neurotechnology startups and leading national initiatives such as the Canadian Neuromuscular Disease Registry (CNDR). He co-founded successful health data technology firms and has received multiple awards for his contributions to the life sciences in Alberta, including the 2023 BioAlberta Vista Award, Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal, and recognition as National Researcher of the Year by Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
