Biography

Larry McCrea received his Ph.D. in South Asian Languages and Civilizations in 1998 from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from Cornell University in the Cornell College Scholar Program in 1989. His recent book project, 'The Teleology Poetics Medieval Kashmir,' published as part of the Harvard Oriental Series in Spring 2009, explores the conceptual revolution in Sanskrit poetic theory brought about by the work of the ninth century Kashmiri scholar Anandavardhana. McCrea argues that a crucial innovation introduced by Anandavardhana was the application of a teleological approach to the literary analysis of texts, informed by the discipline of scriptural hermeneutics. He has a strong interdisciplinary background, blending interests from Asian Studies, Classics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. His teaching includes advanced Sanskrit courses and an introduction to Indian Philosophy.
