Lawrence Rome is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in muscle biomechanics and neurobiology. His research focuses on the functional design of muscular systems, locomotion, and sound production, aiming to answer fundamental questions related to muscle function and performance across animal models. His integrative research approach requires comparative studies that span molecular biophysics to whole-animal biomechanics. By exploring various fish species and employing biophysical techniques, Rome has developed insights into how muscle fiber types and their organization impact locomotion and locomotor performance. He has also addressed how these principles apply to other animals, particularly in understanding the mechanics of jumping frogs.
