Biography

Professor Lawrence Rowe is a retired faculty member from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was the founding director of the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center (BMRC). He has focused his career on the development of streaming media software and has consulted for multimedia research laboratories and startup companies. He headed a research group that produced significant contributions to multimedia technology, including the Berkeley MPEG-1 Tools and the Open Mash Streaming Media Toolkit. Professor Rowe has taught classes on multimedia authoring and has been involved in establishing and operating authoring studios for distributed collaboration and distance learning. He has received a BA degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Information and Computer Science, both from the University of California, Irvine. Over his career, he has worked on database application development tools, technology commercialization, and served on various technical advisory boards. He is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and has also co-founded several technology companies, contributing his technical expertise to the industry.
