Lawrence W. Speck is a professor at the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, where he has been on the faculty since 1975. He served as the dean of the School of Architecture from 1992 to 2001. Speck holds degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and was a faculty member there from 1972 to 1975. He has won numerous awards for his contributions to architecture, including the Amoco Award and the Blunk Professorship for outstanding undergraduate teaching. As a Fulbright Senior Scholar, he has authored over 40 articles in professional journals related to art, architecture, and engineering design. Throughout his distinguished career as a practicing architect, Speck has been recognized with 28 design awards and has published works in more than 60 articles in countries including the U.S., Germany, England, Italy, Japan, and Brazil. Notable projects include the Barbara Jordan Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the Robert E. Johnson Legislative Office Building extension, and the Austin Convention Center. In 1995, Speck was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
